Dr. Ana Luiza Almeida Ferro is a public prosecutor (D.A.) in the Office of the Attorney General in Maranhão State (MPMA), Brazil. Actively representing the government in the prosecution of criminal offenses, Dr. Ferro also works as a law professor for the School of the Attorney General’s Office in Maranhão (ESMP) and for the University Ceuma, where her research and teaching focuses on criminal law and criminology. She is also a writer, historian and lecturer.
 
Dr. Ferro majored in the English Language at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), receiving her degree in 1988. She then continued her studies in the United States at the University of Oregon, where she undertook pre-Master’s studies in English literature with a focus on English Drama. Again in Brazil she studied Law at the Federal University of Maranhão and went on to achieve her master’s degree in Law in Penal Sciences at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Continuing at UFMG, in 2006 she completed her Doctor of Law in Penal Sciences.
 
After a brief time as an English Language Professor at the Linguistic Culture Center (NCL) of the Department of Liberal Arts, UFMA, Dr. Ferro began her work as a public prosecutor in São Luís, MA, Brazil, in 1994. She has remained at the Office of the Attorney General in Maranhão State for over 20 years, and has left a truly significant impact on her department. In addition to her legal duties, she also served as Criminology Professor at the School of the Attorney General’s Office in Minas Gerais Foundation (FESMPMG), teaching graduate courses in Criminal Sciences in Belo Horizonte. Dr. Ferro also acted as Coordinator of Research for the Graduate Program in Law of ESMP/MA and Advisor of Justice Attorney General in 2009 and 2010. From 2011-2013, she became President of the Academy of Maranhão Legal Letters (AMLJ). In addition she is a member and one of the founders of the Academy of São Luís Letters (ALL).
 
As the author of several criminal law books, the most recent ones exploring organized crime and criminal organizations worldwide, Dr. Ferro was interviewed on the Jo’s Program (Programa do Jô) on the national Brazillian TV network Rede Globo. Author of several legal and historical articles and procedural documents published in journals, including the Journal of the Courts (Revista dos Tribunais) and the Journal of IHGM (electronic edition), she also writes poetry and history books, such as 1612, about Equinoctial France, simultaneously published in Brazil and Portugal. A cornerstone of the legal community, she is an Honorary Member of the Brazilian Society of Forensic Psychology (SBPJ), a member of the Brazilian Union of Writers (UBE) and the Management Committee on Institutional Memory Program of the Office of the Attorney General in Maranhão State (MPMA).
 
Dr. Ferro is fluent in Portuguese and English and was bestowed the First Certificate in English and Certificate of Proficiency in English by the University of Cambridge, England. She also speaks with working proficiency in French, holding a Certificat Pratique de Langue Française (1er degré), the Diplôme D’Études Françaises (2e degré) and the Diplôme Supérieur D’Études Françaises (3e degré) from the Université de Nancy II, France. Dr. Ferro also has basic knowledge of Spanish, German and Italian.
