Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Dr. Christian Eberhart

Dr. Christian Eberhart is the Professor and Program Director of Religious Studies at the University of Houston. A recent addition to the university’s Department of Comparative Cultural Studies, Dr. Eberhart now heads the school’s new major in Religious Studies, first offered in 2014. With nearly 20 years of experience in academia, and multiple doctoral degrees to his credit, Dr. Eberhart’s work stands as a prolific and expanding catalog of Biblical research.

After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Heidelberg and the Academy for Jewish Studies in Heidelberg, Eberhart continued his religious education at the University of Marburg. In 1994, he received his Master of Theological Studies from Harvard University. Eberhart then returned to the University of Heidelberg, where he completed his Doctor of Theology with his thesis Studies on the Meaning of Sacrifices in the Old Testament: The Significance of Blood and Burning Rites in a Cultic Setting. From 2001-2004 he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow for the German Research Society on The Bible: Its Development and Its Impact at the University of Tübingen; from 2004-2010 he served as Associate Professor of New Testament Studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Saskatoon, which is affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan, where he was granted tenure. In 2011, Dr. Eberhart received his Habilitation (second doctoral degree) at the University of Mainz. His thesis, Cultic Metaphors and Christology: Studies in Tradition History on Cultic-Christological Metaphors in the New Testament, an impressive 422 pages, was published in the series Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament, vol. 306, in 2013.

Dr. Eberhart has taught a broad range of subjects, including Classical Greek; Biblical Hebrew; the New Testament; Atonement, Sacrifice, Christology; Hermeneutics; Biblical Theology; world religions, and interreligious relations. In June 2014, Dr. Eberhart relocated with his family to join the faculty at the University of Houston.

Dr. Eberhart is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, European Association of Biblical Studies, Canadian Society of Biblical Studies, Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, and is the Founder & longtime Chair of the Sacrifice, Cult, and Atonement Annual Conference Unit of the Society of Biblical Literature. He is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, notably Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung grants, a Harvard Divinity School travel grant, a Lily Theological Research Grant, multiple Learning and Development Grants from Canadian Lutheran World Relief, and a research fellowship for studies at the École Biblique et Archéologique Française in Jerusalem.

Recent publications by Dr. Eberhart include the books: The Sacrifice of Jesus: Understanding Atonement Biblically; and Ritual and Metaphor: Sacrifice in the Bible. He also authored a book on the Eucharist which will be published shortly. Dr. Eberhart speaks German and English fluently, and has a high proficiency in French. Additionally, he possesses a working knowledge of Modern Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Lakota/Sioux, Anishinabe-mowin/Oji-Cre, Classical Greek, Classical Hebrew, Latin, and Biblical Aramaic.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Eberhart is also an accomplished musician. A composer of both religious and secular works, Dr. Eberhart’s music has been performance at Harvard University, the Opera of Toulon in France, in Russia by the Saratov-Orchestra, and by various choirs in France and Germany. A highly engaged family-man, he also performs regularly with a family band. Moreover, he enjoys playing tennis and volunteering as a soccer coach.
