Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Samuel Leistedt, MD, PhD


 
Dr. Samuel Leistedt is currently Forensic Psychiatrist and Professor of Medicine in Europe. He is Advisor for the European Commission and the Forensic Health Hospital “Les Marronniers” in Belgium, where he works in a high security mental department. Here, he evaluates and treats high-level personality pathologies, psychosis, and sex offenders. He also serves as a Professor of Medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Free University of Brussels – ULB), Université de Mons, and the Université de Liège (Faculty of Medicine, Criminology & and the Law).
 
With extensive experience in forensic psychiatry, he has advised the Belgium Federal Courts, European Commission and other national and international organizations on the importance of making correct diagnoses and conducting proper evaluations.  Dr. Leistedt’s first priority is accuracy in evaluations for violent offenders. He believes in the importance of doing what you love in your chosen profession.
 
Dr. Leistedt received his medical degree in Liège (ULg), Belgium, and completed his residency in General Psychiatry at the ULB. He finished a PhD in Clinical Neurophysiology at Harvard Medical School in 2009. During this period, he completed the board of forensic psychiatry, including specific skills, such as psychology of terrorism, violent crimes, organized and hate crimes.
 
Dr. Leisted has served as a teacher and consultant to national and international organizations, and expert witness in both civil and criminal matters, such as psychopathy, sexual disorders including paraphilia, the competency to stand trial and the insanity defense. He is also a consultant for several organizations related to Violent Crime and Terrorism, which is the main field of Doctor Leistedt, such as the Radicalization Process.
 
Dr. Leistedt has published book chapters and numerous papers related to forensic sciences, Terrorism but also on media depictions of psychiatry and mental illness in films. He often gives lectures, research presentations, and has participated in panel discussions and symposia at national and international meetings. He also been elected or appointed to numerous leading positions in the key professional associations in the forensic field.
 
In the future, he looks forward to networking and having discussions with colleagues in other countries to share insight and expertise and learn from each other about various laws, which differ by country, and directly impact the field of forensic psychiatry.
 
He would like to see forensic psychiatry recognized as a specialty in Europe. Some of his affiliations include the European Psychiatric Association, New York Academy of Science, Canadian Society of Forensic Science, the American Psychiatric Association (in which he is International Fellow) and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He speaks French, English Bokmål, and German.
 
In addition to his forensic work in his career, Dr. Leistedt is also a dog behaviorist and dog educator, researching and helping others with their animals. In his spare time, he enjoys writing, chess, and going for a run to minimize stress and stay in shape. He resides in Belgium.
