Who’s Who Recognizes Dr. Karlheinz Schwarz
Dr. Karlheinz Schwarz is Head of the Computational Quantum Theory Group at TU Vienna’s Institute of Materials Chemistry; he was formerly a professor there. Dr. Schwarz is one of the world’s foremost experts on quantum chemistry, solid state physics, density function theory, the materials science, hard materials, high temperature superconductors, catalysts, minerals, and the Wien2k code used by 2,300 groups worldwide in industry and academia (see www.wien2k.at).
Dr. Schwarz’s expertise can partly be attributed to his impressive educational background – he earned his Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry at The University of Vienna, and his postdoctorate at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, Florida. He also received Habilitation in Computational Solid State Chemistry at the Technical University of Vienna. Additionally, he spent time at the IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, California and later at the IBM Watson Research Institute in Yorktown Heights in New York State.
Dr. Schwarz’s passion lies in teaching and research. He has held several leadership positions, including Chairman of the Department of Chemistry of TU Vienna, and Vice Chairman of the Senate of this University. He is also affiliated with the American Physical Society, which works to advance the knowledge of physics.
Dr. Schwarz has been recognized many times for his hard work and dedication, receiving awards including the 1972 Sandoz Prize; the1975 Cardinal Innitzer Promotion Prize of Sciences; the 1994 Science and Technology Agency (STA) Fellowship Award, Japan; the 1995 Rudolf Wegscheiderpreis of the Austrian Academy of Science (Akademie der Wissenschaften); was named a 2001 Corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Science; and 2006 Foreign Member Royal Society of Science at Uppsala University (Sweden). He also received the 2007 Award from The City of Vienna. In 2012 he received the Viennese Engineering Award (Wiener Ingenieurpreis).
